Department Functions:

The Command Department is responsible for the leadership and administration of the club. As the Kelly is the flagship of The Seventh Fleet, the Fleet Commander (Admiral Dennis Hollinger) actively participates alongside the club's command officers in these duties. In military terms, the Admiral's flag is on the Kelly.

Captain Richard Henline heads the club and makes the "big" decisions. The Admiral does not attempt to make such decisions for Captain Henline and rarely has a need to override them, although he has authority to do so. The Captain represents the ship on the Seventh Fleet Council, coordinating all command-level information with the other clubs. Captain Henline is also the Senior Captain in the Fleet. This designation applies to whomever has held that rank the longest.

The Executive Officer handles routine administrative duties and is responsible to oversee the Department Chiefs, as well as keeping on top of crew issues & training. Currently Lt. Cmdr. David Thalmann holds this position. Dave acts as "Head Cheerleader" for the group; keeping us enthused about Star Trek and the U.S.S. Kelly.

The Strategic Operations Officer is over "external" matters affecting the club. Lt. Commander George Bogler handles these responsibilities, such as coordinating non-command-level items with other clubs in the Fleet as well as with local fandom in general. Lt. Cmdr Bogler sits on the boards of UtahSF and Mountain Con. The SOO is Second Officer in terms of command, but is administratively equal to the Executive Officer. Currently the position includes the extra duties of Webmaster, and Editor of our quarterly club newsletter: the Kelly Communique.

Command is a restricted department and is limited to the above offices or any additional Command Staff positions the Captain might create.
